Kannauj, a great historic town on the banks of the River Ganga, is merely 80 km away from Kanpur. In the past, Kannuj was said to be the capital of the Harshvardhan’s empire, stretched between the rivers Satlej and Narmada and eastern Bengal. It is known for its most popular Indian essence (ittar) industry.
Bhitargaon, about 80km from Kanpur, is located in Ghatampur tehsil. It is well known for a brick temple belonging to Gupta era, dated back to 600 AD, is built of large-sized bricks and decorated with well modeled terra-cotta panel. The temple is the oldest roofed Hindu shrine extant with a high Sikhara, and its interior is plain but the outer side, is decorated with carved brickwork and numerous terracotta panels.
Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, located 43 km from Lucknow, on the Lucknow-Kanpur Highway near Unnao, is known for the rare Siberian migratory birds, found during winters. The popular bird species found are Pintain, Pigeon, Common teal, Shoveller, Pochard, Coot, Purple Moorhen and others. |
